OUR CLIENT’S IMPACT

The Client Ask

Establish and operationalize a trusted continental platform to mobilize resources, partnerships, and long-term investment for Africaˇs public health priorities.

THE CONTEXT

As Africa CDCˇs mandate expanded rapidly, Africa lacked a unified and trusted platform to mobilize and manage large-scale philanthropic and private-sector funding for public health. Donor engagement was fragmented, financing mechanisms were underdeveloped, and long-term investment in public health systems remained difficult to sustain.

THE CHALLENGE

  • Establishing a structure to mobilize and manage largescale public health funding

  • Expanding Africa CDC mandate without parallel growth

  • Fragmented donor engagement and limited long-term

OUR APPROACH

Between 2019 and 2020, AHB partnered closely with Africa CDC, AFENET, and APHF leadership to deliver end-to-end institution-building support through a structured, phased approach.

We began by establishing clear governance and oversight structures to anchor accountability and decision-making. In parallel, we designed fit-for-purpose operational and management systems, ensuring the institution could function effectively from day one.

Working closely with senior leadership, we supported strategic alignment and positioning, translating vision into an executable institutional mandate. This was complemented by targeted capacity-building to prepare the foundation to receive, manage, and deploy philanthropic and partner funding at scale.

Through this integrated approach, combining governance, systems design, leadership alignment, and funding readiness, our work enabled APHFˇs transition from concept to a credible, functional continental platform.

The result

Since 2020, APHF has mobilized USD 55+ million, including USD 20+ million in its first year to support Africa CDCˇs COVID-19 response, and has secured ongoing engagement from philanthropic, private-sector, government, and high-net-worth partners. This financing has translated into measurable impact across Africa, including the distribution of 500,000+ COVID-19 rapid diagnostic tests in 12 countries, the training of 1,500+ community health workers in five countries, and 50+ laboratory biosafety specialists. APHF has supported vaccination efforts in Cameroon, Namibia, Zambia, and Kenya, deployed rapid response teams in Senegal and Kenya, contributed to outbreak responses for Ebola, Marburg, and Cholera, and strengthened regional coordinating centres in Gabon and Nigeria. By supporting the early establishment of APHFˇs governance and operational systems, our efforts positioned the foundation as a credible platform for mobilizing sustained public health financing at continental scale.
